Francis Xavier

Francis Xavier
(1506–52)
   Saint and Missionary.
Francis was born in Navarre of an aristocratic family. While studying theology at the University of Paris, he became acquainted with ignatius loyola. In 1534, Francis, Ignatius and five others vowed themselves to a life of single-minded dedication to Jesus Christ and all seven were ordained as priests three years later. In 1539 Francis was sent as a missionary to the East Indies where he started a preaching and healing ministry. From his base in Goa, he travelled through south-west India and in 1549 he landed in Japan where he founded a community of two thousand people. He returned to Goa in 1552, but died on his way to China. Francis is said to have brought seven hundred thousand souls to God. His methods have been criticised as insensitive and imperialistic and his use of the Inquisition to reinforce his message does not recommend itself to the modern mind. None the less his selfless dedication is undisputed and he did much to interest the Christian world in foreign missions.
